Description
Early image of Derek Bell at Goodwood in his F3Lotus 31. Goodwood was very much a "home track" for Derek living as he did at Church Farm, Pagham, less than 7 miles away. Derek is now best known for his Sports Car successes and most of all for his multiple wins at Le Mans.
However his career had started at Goodwood on March 13th 1964 when he entered a race in a Lotus 7 heowned with a close friend, John Penfold. The Lotus 7 he drove to victory waspreviously owned byJohn Barnes (see other entries), another local motor sport enthusiast based in Sidleshamwho concentrated mainly on hill climbs and rallying.
In 1966 and 1967 Derek travelled all over Europe contesting F3 races, firstly with a Lotus 41 and then a Brabham BT21 – the latter in a team with Peter Westbury and Mac Daghorn. During this time he won 9 such races and finished on the podium many times, 1967 being a great improvement on his many crashes and the learning experiences of the previous year. By the end of the year he was awarded the second Grovewood Award and was looking towards F2 in 1968.
