This photograph is reproduced on pages 142 and 143 of Janos Wimpffen’s book Winged Sports Cars & Endurance Innovation (The International Championship for Manufacturers in photographs, 1962 – 1971.) Seattle based Wimpffen is an acknowledged expert onthe history of sports car racing and is the author of two other books covering this subject – Time and Two Seats and Open Roads and Front Engines.
His comment accompanying the photograph states "The 1964 Tourist Trophy was one of the few bright spots in the short and troubled history of the Lotus 30. The objective of placing a large V8 into a chassis more accustomed to small-bore four cylinders was laudable but poorly executed. It was intended to contest the increasingly popular unlimited sports car class, Group 7…… The Lotus 30 suffered from poor suspension and brakes, and it took all of Jim Clark’s considerable talents to keep it among the front-runners for the opening part of the race".
