Description
Early 1968 testing at Goodwood: Derek Bell had just taken delivery of his Brabham BT23C withRay Wardle, his mechanic, returning with it from the factorywhere he had been responsible for putting it together. Early running was delayed by a fuel leak but then Derek was able to put some laps in to prepare for his first F2 race in Barcelona. Sadly his engine dropped a valve in practice and, without his spare Cosworth being delivered he had to return to the UK without a race. After seven subsequent races, which included third places at Thruxton and the Nurburgring, he was approached by Ferrari to test one of their Dino 166s with a view to driving it in the Monza Lottery Formula 2 Grand Prix. Up against several Italian drivers, including Tino Brambilla, he was quicker than any and then went on to put the Ferrari on pole for the race. Despite a nasty crash in that race he wasto compete nine times in 1968 for Ferrari including three races in the F1 Ferrari 312.
